Plate G7.no4: Sanctuary at St Peter’s Seminary – Cardross (Scotland)
Hard to believe that this picture is from a seminary. The seminary in question is the St. Peters Seminary, designed by the modernist architects Isi Metzstein and Andy MacMillan, built in the early 60’s.
I’m not referring to the graffiti – but rather to the form. It’s such a dynamic line, abrasive even and perhaps jarring to the eye – but if one were to look at the plan of this building, one would immediately notice the complementary role this balustrade plays, as counterpoint to the adjacent curve of the wall, against which a ramp rises up from below from which the monks would dramatically appear.
Just one, of almost an innumerable number of wonderful moments in the building often lauded as the greatest modern building in the UK.
